Year 3 Spelling
Students will be in varying developmental spelling stages. Each student will also move through each stage at their own pace.
Students in Year 3 undertook a diagnostic spelling assessment in week one of this term. This allowed the teachers to determine each student's spelling capabilities and enabled students to be grouped into Words Their Way focus groups to implement a relevant programme for your child. Each student knows which spelling group they are in.

Examples of each stage are listed here:
Blends - sl as in slide; st as in stick; dr as in drain; bl as in blue; fr as in friend; cr as in cry; tr as in trick
Common Long Vowels - o-e as in hope; ai as in wait; i-e as in nine; ea as in dream; a-e as in sale; oa as in coach; igh as in light
Consonants - b, d, f, g, h, m, n, p, r, t, w.
Digraphs - sh as in sheep; sh as in wish; ch as in church, th as in thorn
Inflected Endings - -ed as in chewed; -ed as in shouted; -es as in dishes; -ies as in cries; -pping as in flapping; -ding as in riding
Other Vowels - ew as in chew; aw as in crawl; or as in horn; ou as in shout; oi as in boil; ow as in growl; ir as in third
Short Vowels - a,e,i,o,u, as in fat, egg, rig, sob, gum.
