I love trivia. It doesn't matter if one gets all the questions correct or not as one is likely to learn at least one thing. There have been may quiz shows, and prior to TV radio programs that involve the asking of general knowledge questions for entertainment. However, it really wasn't until the release of Trivial Pursuit board game in Australia (1983) that I became fascinated with what I didn't know.
People think that trivia started in the 1960's but it has been around a lot longer than that. The word 'trivia' (noun) is derived from the word 'trivial' (adjective) meaning of little value or importance. The actual word trivia was first used in 1965 to mean general knowledge games.
How many of us learnt the Periodic Table and thought 'this has little value or importance' - well in a game of trivia it's amazing how that 'unimportant' periodic table comes back to you.
Through the ages from Egyptian and Greek philosophers, through the Middle Ages random and more particular questions have been asked not only in political and educational settings, but also in social settings for entertainment.
Today Trivia Pub Quizzes are often a weekly event and fund raising trivia is often an annual event for many schools and churches.
So with that in mind, I'm going to endeavour to make some 20 questions trivia as a regular post. They will all be indexes in a TAB.
Here is a sample one:
- When was Trivial Pursuit released in Australia?
- What word is trivia derived from?
- What year was the word trivia first used?
Answers:
- 1983
- Trivial
- 1965
